About
I'm Maier Tan, founder and tutor at The Precision Lab. My credibility isn't a row of certificates; it's that I struggled, found a way out, and now help students do the same.
I bombed my Sec 4 prelims. I cried, hugged my mum, and apologised for letting her down. She told me something I've never forgotten: don't be sorry to me, be sorry to yourself, because you're doing this for yourself.
That one line rewired how I thought about studying. It stopped being about pleasing someone. It became mine.
I stopped burning the midnight oil and started being deliberate. I listed what I was good and bad at, then spent most of my time on the weak spots, even when it felt terrible, because that's where the marks were hiding. I slept early, woke early, and worked in focused blocks with real breaks. By O-Levels, I'd turned it around.
I made that comeback mostly on my own. I didn't have someone who could relate, diagnose where I was stuck, and guide me through it. So now, with every student I take, I try to become that person, the tutor I wish I'd had. I picked up tutoring as a side thing in university and it became part of who I am. I skipped internships entirely to keep teaching.
No student starts from zero. Even the smallest thing they know is a foothold, so that's where we start. "I don't know how to do" isn't a verdict; it's just the place we begin. My job is to fix the foundation, build genuine understanding, and protect the productive struggle where real learning happens.
I'm still climbing, building The Precision Lab into a place where small classes and real mentoring are the standard, not the exception. If that's the kind of teaching you want for your child, let's talk.
